The ever-troubled ex-Parma man has again been at the mercy of the ruthless Italian media for his poor form in recent times, after a forgettable night in front of goal against Catania effectively cost his side the tie.
As a result, Milan were dumped out of the Coppa Italia by the minnows and are now left fighting on just two fronts: the league and the Champions League.
With the former looking well beyond them - and fourth place indeed a struggle - things could be better at the San Siro, despite the overflowing trophy cabinet.
Gila has struggled for form all season and, a couple of good performances aside, has bore the brunt of the criticism for Milan's impotence in front of goal during the first half of the season, during which time wonder-kid Alexandre Pato was ineligible, legendary striker Ronaldo was injured and Italian hero Filippo Inzaghi, though match fit, could not cope with the Rossoneri's gruelling fixture schedule at the age of 34.
Despite Gila's troubles, the Milan boardroom and management have remained loyal to the player of whom so much was expected upon his arrival from Parma in 2005.
Rumours have recently surfaced that the player's agent has suggested the 25-year-old may be leaving San Siro, but these have now been firmly denied by the club's outspoken president, Silvio Berlusconi.
"Selling Alberto Gilardino? Never," he declared. "You have not got to follow what's in the papers."
