Dimitar Berbatov knocked in the opening goal to give Spurs a lead which looked like being priceless right up until the end when Carlos Tevez somehow knocked in an equaliser from a corner in the fourth and final minute of added time.
With Arsenal impressing once again, ending Manchester United's local rivals Manchester City's unbeaten run at home this season with a 3-1 victory, this draw, though fortunate on the face of it, still leaves Sir Alex with a job to do, as they will now have to do the chasing once again as Arsenal top the table.
Good Result
Sir Alex, in all his experience, chose not to pay such matters too much attention with so many games still to go, and was actually quite pleased with the result.
"I think it's a good result for us, and it shows we never give in," he declared.
"In the last 25 minutes we battered them really.
"Tottenham played very well in the first half, deserved to be in front, it was a real open game."
Seeing Red
The one moment that did not please the Scotsman wasn't the conceding of the goal, but a foul on Cristiano Ronaldo by Jermaine Jenas in the first half that went unpunished. In general he was not pleased with the performance of the referee, as United were given seven yellow cards through the course of the game, with Ferguson not necessarily feeling all were deserved.
"Ronaldo's hacked down, absolute red card as far as I'm concerned," he bemoaned. "He lets it go, he talks to Jenas for 30 seconds, [the referee] does nothing about it."
Wayne Rooney was also booked for a dive, and Sir Alex believes that Tom Huddlestone got away with a similar offence.
Nip and Tuck
He remained upbeat regarding the title race, insisting there are far too many games to go to start drawing conclusions just yet, and as Arsenal and Manchester United have already swapped positions several times so far this season, one is inclined to believe him.
"It's going to be nip and tuck all the way," he said. "Arsenal are two points in front of us of course, but there's a lot of big games to come.
"You can't say who's gong to win the league, because it's so tight."
Fortunate
While Sir Alex Ferguson had no complaints about Tottenham's goal, goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and defender Rio Ferdinand most certainly did. They were aggrieved that a handball was not spotted by the match officials in the build-up to the goal.
"I think they were a bit fortunate with their goal," declared Ferdinand to MUTV.
"I was behind it and I could see Jenas lying on the floor handling it. That's why I remonstrated with the linesman – how he didn't see it, I'll never know."
Last Chance Saloon
The England defender went on to recall the dying seconds of the game, in which Man United salvaged a priceless equaliser in the nick of time.
"I remember going up for the corner and the referee said to me '30 seconds left', so I knew it was last-chance saloon," he recalled.
"Luckily the ball in was good from Nani and Carlos was there to slot it home.
"We knew we had to come here and work hard. You need spirit if you want to win things and we showed that."
