The signing by Tottenham of Brazil full-back Gilberto looks a little closer after his club, Hertha Berlin, confirmed on Tuesday that they have had talks with Spurs about the player.
Gilberto, 31, is out-of-contract in the summer, but Tottenham are keen to sign the left-back while the January transfer window remains open.
Hertha's general manager, Dieter Hoeness, confirmed to Sport1: "The door for Tottenham is now so wide open that you can talk about it.
"The transfer fee must be high enough so we have enough to commit to a substitute for Gilberto.
"The talks continue. It is and remains the decision of Hertha whether Gilberto moves or not."
Tottenham originally bid 1 million euros for the player, but then reportedly raised that to 1.6 million euros.
Hertha will be keen to bring in a replacement for Gilberto should he move, and are reportedly running the rule over FK Novi Sad's midfielder, Gojko Kacar.
